December 16, 2013

I forgot to send this out last week and he did not send a letter this week, but we will be talking to him tomorrow!

This week was a very tough week. We started off the week very focused on the baptisms that we were going to have.  We visited them every night preparing them for the baptism. On Friday we they had the baptism interviews. The people here get really nervous about the baptism interviews because they are expecting some really hard test. So we fasted so that every thing would run smoothly. I had a exchange in Sayaxche with an Elder named Elder Loveland, while my district leader went with Elder Lutz to Libertad to do the interviews. On Friday night I got the phone call that they all passed and everything was good to go for the baptism. On Saturday we had to clean the baptism font because it was really dirty. We started about two and we were going to have the baptism at 5. A little after 4 a member came to the church and told us that they were no longer getting baptized. I was shocked. I didn't believe it, so we went to their house and we had a talk with them. They gave us a bunch of reasons of why they couldn't be baptized. It was such a terrible feeling as we walked out of their house. I know that they have received an answer from God that these things are true, but its not important enough to act on it for them. It was very sad. That took away all of the excitement that we had for that day.

Well this week we are going to work with them and see what we need to do to help them get where they need to be. I know that this is Gods church and that through the covenants that we make with our Heavenly Father we can be with our families forever.

December 9, 2013

Well this week has been absolutely crazy with transfers and all. I think I was worrying about leaving La Libertad all week, so I made sure it would be a good last week. We had a ton of exito in the work. But to my surprise we found out on Saturday that we don't have any changes!! Elder Lutz and I will be together for 6 more weeks! We are both really excited about that. We have a lot of work to get done this change. We need to get new investigators and baptize. This week we are praying to have 4 baptisms. This work has been so rewarding. We are beginning to see the fruit of our labors.

I know that this is Gods work. That if we put in our part we can become more like our savior Jesus Christ. I know that the Book of Mormon is true and that men can bring themselves closer to God by reading it.

December 2, 2013

This week was a great week. On Wednesday we had the opportunity to go have a zone conference with a 70. Carlos Amado. He taught us a ton. I really enjoyed it. He taught us how to be better teachers and how to be more obedient to the prompting of the spirit. Then the day after was thanksgiving. But for us it wasn't any normal thanksgiving. We spent the whole day teaching and visiting investigators. But at the end of the day we bought a pizza to celebrate. We have been working hard with our investigators and in 2 weeks we should have 6 or 7 baptisms here. The sad thing is that next we we have transfers and one of us won't be able to see the baptisms. I'm really hoping that I can make it, but we will see if the Lord wants me to stay here or not.

I know that this is Gods work. I know that when we are obedient to God will we are blessed. I love this work. I know without any doubt that there is nothing more important in this world than the wok of salvation.

November 18, 2013

Well this week has been crazy! On Thursday I had a companion exchange with one of our zone leaders. It was amazing. I learned a lot of new teaching skills. Then after that there was a baptism on Friday in the church and we showed up early to fill up the font, but I started to feel like I was getting a fever while we where in the church. We waited and we greeted all of the members who showed up and then before I knew it my fever was bad and I was shaking because I was cold (even though it was in the 90s). We missed the baptism and we went straight to the house where I pretty much have spent the last three days. I don't know exactly what I had, but it was nasty. Even though I was sick we went to sacrament meeting, because I wanted to know which of our investigators would make it to church. We have been teaching a lady named Dina. She has been such a good investigator and has always completed her commitments except going to church. We have fasted and prayed that she would go almost every week for the last month. Right as they were about to bless the sacrament, we saw Dina walk in with all of her children. It made me so happy. We really thought that the Lord had giving up on helping her get to church, but it was proof to me that all of our prayers and fasting in this last month haven't been in vain! Oh and the family we are teaching showed up as well. We are hoping to get them baptized in two weeks!

I'm positive that this is Gods work and that He wants us to be happy. He only asks us to be obedient and we can have all of the blessings that we have ever wanted.

This week was a lot better than last week! There isn't a lot to write about though, but we had a lot of exito. The first counselor of the branch presidency had his brother move to La Libertad with his family. They arrived last Monday and we taught them on Wednesday and they all accepted a baptism date. We might get them all baptized this month.  We got 4 investigators into sacrament meeting, so I was very pleased with that.

I know that this is Gods work and his church. I know that if we keep Gods commandments we are happier.

This week has been full of discouragement.  I don't know what happened to Elder Lutz and I. This week was probably the best start to a week I have had my whole mission. We started off having a lot of lessons, a lot of contacts and new investigators, but after that we haven't found anything! After Thursday everything went down hill. We had set appointments, but nobody was home. Elder Lutz and I have been perfectly obedient and I don't know what was causing our terrible luck. My District Leader is convinced that the Lord wants us to learn something. Well whatever it is I hoped we learned it and it won't carry on to this coming week. Besides that nothing much has happened. Today we played soccer, so that was kind of fun.

I'm very happy about this week that has passed! Elder Lutz and I are doing real good work down here. This week we met almost all of the goals we put up this last week. And we have been working very closely with the branch. I am very excited to see the things that are going to come here. This Wednesday we are going to be visited by a 70. I'm really excited to learn something new and how we can improve the efficiency of our work. This week we found a new investigator, but it was hard to communicate with him because his first language is Qeche. I think we have a member who speaks it who will help us teach, so that will be interesting!

I know that the church is the only true church on the face of the earth. I know there is a prophet that receives revelation from God. I know that we can become closer to God by reading the scriptures, but especially the Book of Mormon.

This week has been a very exciting week regarding the work. We met all of our goals lesson wise. We are doing everything possible to fill up the church on Sunday. We also have been working a lot with the members and we got 4 new investigators through references  There is a lot of potential here. I'm really excited for what can become of this branch. The church attendance is anywhere from 70 to 100, but almost always in the 80s. I just remember one year ago with my trainer we had an attendance of 30. They need 150! Elder Lutz and I are having some real exitio. We may not baptize this month, but we have really accomplished a ton.

I'm so sure that this is Gods work. I know that without a doubt we are children of God and he loves us!

This week was fantastic! If we didn't have to watch the general conference we would have gotten a lot more done, but I don't regret that at all because I loved the conference  I feel like it was one of the most inspired conferences since I have been in the  mission. It was filled with the spirit. I learned a ton and there was a lot of advice for missionaries. As missionaries we really need to talk to more people instead of going from appointment to appointment ignoring all the people who we walk by that we could help. E Lutz and I have been trying to find new investigators and I felt that was divine advice for us. This week we are hoping to put up at least one baptism date. I love working with Elder Lutz. He is very excited about the work and he wants to be perfectly obedient.

I know that this work is Gods work. I know when we are obedient to his commandments blessings come.

This week hasn't been a very productive week for our schedule. I feel like something has happened everyday this week from working as hard as I would like. One thing that was awesome about this week is that we had interviews with Pres Curtiss. I love talking to the President. He gave me so much advice on how to help the area of La Libertad. On Friday it was super hot. The whole day we were sweating a ton and then at 6p.m. we visited some less actives and the sun was still up. But after being in the lesson for 5 minutes clouds came from nowhere and it started to rain harder than I've ever seen and the wind was blowing really hard and then the lighting came. I've never seen lighting strike so close in my whole life. The lightning hit the tree in front of the house we were in and then again once the raining stopped. When we got to our house our neighbors told us that one bolt hit our house and one hit their house as well. It made all of the light bulbs in our neighbors house explode and it made one explode in our house. It was crazy.  Another thing that happened is that it killed my battery charger for my camera. It was plugged in when the lightning hit so it burnt out.
Besides that there isn't too much to write. I know that this work is true. I know that I'm serving God and this is his work. I know without any doubt that there is nothing better I could be doing with my life right now.

September 23, 2013

Wow this week was a very busy week. On Tuesday I traveled up to San Andres where we waited for our companions. On Wednesday they arrived in Santa Elana and then from there we went down to La Libertad. Right now I love my area. They split up La Libertad into two areas. The other Elders here are awesome. One is Elder Gomez and he is from Argentina and is training a new missionary from Peru named Elder Rodriguez. And my new companion is Elder Lutz. He is from Grangeville, Idaho (not too far from Spokane) and I feel like this will be a very good transfer. We weren't able to work too much this week because we had to help the Elders in La Libertad 2 move into their house, but besides not working that much it was a good week because we finished the week with a baptism  We baptized a 15 year old kid named Marco. He goes to seminary every night and has been going to church for two months straight. It was a great experience because almost all of his friends are members and I feel that they are really going to support him. Well besides that there isn't too much to much to write about.

I love everyone back home a ton. I love this work. I know without any doubt that this is Gods work. And that this is his church

This week has been ok. I haven't been working in my area but its been ok. This week I'm finally going to have a companion so I'm going to be back to work in La  Libertad. Another thing that is going to happen is that they are going to divide La Libertad into two areas. Four missionaries will bless this branch so much. Oh and an exciting thing is that this week we should have a baptism, so that will be great. This will be the fourth baptism that the area has had this year.
Another thing that was exciting this week is that we had our transfers this week. We found out that I'm going to be training and it is already confirmed that he will be a gringo. So I'm pretty excited to have my first gringo companion.
I'm so happy to be where I'm right now. I know that without an doubt that the Lord has prepared me to be here in this time. I know that the Book of Mormon is true and that any man can bring himself closer to God by living the teachings in that Book.

September 10, 2013

Ok well this week has probably been the craziest week of my mission. On Tuesday I got a phone call from the Zone Leaders and they told me that Elder Tamayo would be leaving the next day. But there was one problem! There isn't any companionship of three in the whole mission so they would not have anyone that could be my new companion. So I had to leave my area and go down to an area with other elders in my district. Its terrible! We have so many things going on in my area and so many investigators that are getting ready for baptism in the upcoming weeks! So right now we have been going to La Libertad once every few days to work there and then we are back in their area for 4 days. But this won't last too long because next week we have transfers and I will be getting my new companion in those transfers. So I just need to aguantar one more week. Oh something exciting that happened was that we had the first baptism in La Libertad in 6 months. It was a great baptism. 61 members showed up! Oh and we had the highest church attendance in the history of the branch. Before the highest ever was 89. This last week it was 112! Its growing so much. And its sounding like my area is going to get divided this next transfer and they are going to add 2 more elders to La Libertad!
I'm so happy to be here as a missionary helping the growth of the church. I know that this is God's work and that he has a plan for everyone of us. He wants us to be happy. I know that through the gospel of Jesus Christ all men can change and be better people than they have been.

This week has been very productive! We had so much success and this week we are going to have a baptism. I'm very excited, Its going to be the first baptism in the area in 6 months! And in two weeks we should have two more. We are really changing the face of this area with the help of the members.
Well I have ran out of my email time, but I want to let everyone know that I love this work and I love being a missionary. I know that when we are obedient to Gods commandments he always will bless us.

Wow I cannot believe that this week I'm going to hit one year in the mission. The time is going way too fast! Right now its really weird being in La Libertad. This week my comp and I got a lot done. We have been finding new people and putting up baptism dates. We have the goal of having 3 baptisms this change. Besides that I don't know what else to write about. This week has been pretty boring. Boring, but a week filled of work. We had 63 at church on Sunday, so I'm glad the church is growing here! We also he the goal of getting a church attendance of 90 this transfer. I know its possible.

I know that this is Gods work. I know that he loves us and wants us to be  happy.

August 12, 2013

Well this week has been a very rushed week. Last Monday I visited everyone in Dolores and said my goodbyes and then I left on Tuesday at 7 am. I waited with the Zone Leaders until 5 when we received our transfers. That is when I found out that I was going  back to La Libertad!! And I was put with Elder Escobar as my companion. I was SOO excited because he is one of my best friends in the mission. He has 7 months and has been waiting for his visa to go to Argentina. So I spent this week working with Escobar and surprising all of the members in Libertad. But then on Friday we got terrible news. The ZLs called and told us that Elder Escobar has his visa and will be leaving on Sunday for Argentina. I'm not gonna lie we were so devastated. I have my new comp right now. His name is Elder Tamayo and he is from Ecuador and has 4 months in the mission. I knew Elder Tamayo in my last district and I'm very excited to be with him, but its still crappy that Escobar is gone.

I have a testimony of this work and I know that the Lord has a plan for me. We need to trust in his will.

August 5, 2013

This week has been a crazy week! This week my companion and I were fighting a illness we had and we were both trying to work as hard as possible because it could be our last time here in Dolores. As of right now we have three baptisms that are going to take place in 2 weeks. I was hopping to stay in Dolores to see these baptisms take place. Last night we got our change phone calls and we found out that I'm going to be transferred.  I'm going to find out where my new area is tomorrow. I'm very sad about being changed, but at the same time I'm very optimistic about the future. I have not had an area that I haven't liked. I'm sure I'm going to love my next area and its going to be where the Lord needs me right now.

I have a strong testimony about this work! I know that this is the church of Christ. No one will be able to stop this work from expanding. I know that any man can come closer to God through the Book of Mormon than any other book. I also know that the Book of Mormon is the convincing evidence that this church is true. I love being a missionary.

July 29, 2013

One more week done! This week was a good week. We put up three baptism dates for the 24th of August. I'm so excited. This area has changed so much since I've been here I really hope I will be given the chance to stay here to see more of the progress here. I almost have 5 months in this area so its very likely I will be changed, but we will see. Next month I think we will be moving into a new house (without rats) yay.

I'm very thankful for the chance I have to be a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ. I know that this is His work. I'm so thankful for the knowledge of the Plan of Salvation. The Lord wants us to be happy.

*I emailed Drew back and forth and we talked about the accident last week where Elder Burton was hurt and then passed away.  Drew said that it is common for all of the missionaries to hop into the back of trucks to hitch rides between villages.  He said that this truck that had 6 missionaries in the back went over an embankment and down a big ledge.  The other missionaries have cuts and bruises but nothing serious.  Drew also said that he is not going to catch rides in the back of trucks like this anymore and told me, "Mom, I promise you, I will be returning home in 1 year and 23 days!" :)

July 22, 2013

Wow I cannot believe that today I hit 11 months in the mission. The time has gone by way too fast. I still feel like a new missionary. This week was a little less productive than I would have liked. We lost Tuesday doing service and Thursday we had our interviews with President Curtiss. We lost pretty much two days this week. :P But my interview was great. I loved it. It was so great to meet President Curtiss. He is so excited about the work. We also worked on finding a new house. I think within one month the Elders of Dolores will have a new house, but I might be transferred in 2 weeks ha.

I'm so sure that this is the Lords work. I'm so grateful for my knowledge of the Plan of Salvation. I know without a doubt that families can be together forever. I also know that the Book of Mormon is the key to family unity.

July 15, 2013

Well one more week down. It wasn't too exciting at all. We just had a lot of appointments that fell through and we walked a lot. This week we might change our house, but we will see how that goes. I've been very tired this week because we did so much work, but we have nothing to show for it. Two of our baptism dates fell through as well, but I have the faith that we can baptize them in August.

I'm very happy to be where I am. I know without a doubt that The Church of Jesus Christ has been restored on the earth again and that as missionaries we are inviting people to join the church of Christ.

July 8, 2013

What a strange week! This was my first 4th of July outside the United States. I'm very grateful to be from such a great country where I have so many opportunities.  Living in Guatemala for 10 months has helped me see all the blessings I have in the states. This week we didn't have too much success, but we had a baptism so that's something really exciting. And the branch is growing! We had a church attendance of 24! Crazy considering that when I first got here we were only 7. The Lord is blessing the small town of Dolores. I have a firm testimony that He is preparing more people to receive his gospel.  Its very possible that by the time we finish this month we will have 6 baptisms. We just need to work work and work and trust a little bit more in the Lord.

This week we didn't have changes. We didn't have changes in the whole mission because the new president doesn't want to make changes until he knows all the missionaries. But the good news is that this change is only going to be 4 weeks long instead of 6.

I'm very thankful to be a missionary and to have a knowledge of the plan of salvation. The Lord loves us and wants to bless us, but we always need to be willing to do His will. Elder Simon

July 2, 2013

July 2, 2013

Well this week has been a very productive week. We weren't able to work on Tuesday or Sunday because of all of our meetings, but in the few days we had, we got a lot of work done. On Tuesday we traveled 2 hours to go and say goodbye to Pres and Hna Watts. It was sad saying goodbye, but I'm confident that the future will bring many blessings. This week we put up 3 new baptism dates and they are all with people that are really prepared and ready to receive the restored gospel. One of the new converts will be a member from the Adventist church that has been such a blessing for us. We found her about 3 weeks ago and she has taught us so much. She is going to be a great member in this small branch. In this month we will have 5 baptisms. The crappy thing is that I believe that this change I'm going to get moved and won't be able to see these baptisms. I'm really starting to see the fruits of my labor. I'm so glad to have been put in a tough area like this because I have grown so much and I can have a bigger impact here than in any other area. When I got here we had a Sunday attendance of 7 and now we had 18 this last week. I really have a testimony of being obedient to the Lords will. Our obedience has allowed us to be instruments in the Lords hands in helping this area grow. This next week I will be able to tell if there is a transfer or not.

I love being a missionary. I know that this is the Lords work and it is growing. The Book of Mormon can help any person come closer to God.

With Love
